GTL FORMULA E CAR CONCEPT June 12, 2012

The Bluebird GTL racing car is designed to contest the FIA Formula E world series electric car street racing championships that commence in 2014. According to the many articles below this car is currently just a design concept, built for aerodynamic testing work, which was to be carried out in the summer of 2012. See their Facebook site for details of the track-ready vehicle and scheduled tests for September 2012.

Racing is evolving in new and exciting ways, and electric cars will no doubt be a big part of future motorsports. Even the FIA, which organizes events like Formula One, is getting into the game with new rules that encourage hybrid drivetrains, along with the formation of the Formula-E all-electric racing series. Now Bluebird, a racing organization with roots dating back over a century, has unveiled its entrant for the inaugural Formula-E competition in 2014.

I’ve written about Bluebird before, back when they tried to break their own EV land speed record. That ended in disaster, though obviously that has not deterred them from continuing to try new ways of clean racing. Bluebird joins other teams like Fondtech and Quimera who are hoping to make it into Formula-E when the series debuts in a couple of years. Though the setup and qualifications have not yet been set, Formula-E stands to bring electric car racing into the mainstream. The Charging Point has an interview with Don Wales, whose grandfather first adapted the Bluebird name for his own land speed record racer.

Details on the Bluebird GTL Formula-E racer are scant, although one obvious difference is an enclosed cockpit, something most open-wheel racers lack. As far as re-charging, battery swapping, or inductive charging, we’re not sure, though hopefully batteries will have evolved to the point where more than 15 minutes of racing at a time are allowed.

With Bluebird throwing its hat into the ring, Formula-E is looking like it might have a real shot at happening. But can it draw enough drivers and interest to make it a legitimate success? Only time will tell, though this writer’s hopes are high that this new electric racing series will be only the beginning of a new era of sustainable motorsports.

For those that are unaware, the FIA is still organizing and developing the Formula E racing series, which it almost the exact same racing as Formula 1, minus the vroom-vroom of the internal combustion engines. This series uses only cars that utilize sustainable energy, which means no gasoline or diesel, just the ominous hum of an electric motor.

The series is loosely set to kick off in 2014 and manufacturers have started coming forward with cars for the series. This latest car is pretty wild, to say the least. It looks almost like a Le Mans prototype car and the Batmobile had a wild night in the Batcave and the Bluebird GTL Formula E racing concept was the end result.

It takes most of its styling cues from the closed-cockpit-style Le Mans cars that have no rearward window, which was Audi’s reasoning for replacing the rearview mirror. It is very obvious that the focal point in building this machine was aerodynamics, as the curves are plentiful and there are no visual flat spots to catch the air.

According to its developers, the pictured model is purely just a prototype that they are using for wind tunnel testing and there is no motor information available yet. They anticipate a track-ready model to be completed by the end of September in hopes of racing in the Formula E’s debut season – if one ever kicks off.

We will keep you updated on this newest addition to the Formula E series and let you know the second its manufacturer releases some performance specs.

THE CHARGING POINT JUNE 12 2012

First look at stunning electric race car from record-breaking Bluebird name

One hundred years after record-breaker Sir Malcolm Campbell christened his Brooklands racing car ‘Blue Bird’, his grandson Don Wales today unveiled the Bluebird GTL Formula-E electric circuit racer in London’s Haymarket.

GTL Formula-E has been designed specifically for the inaugural Formula-E race series in 2014. The championship is the first electric series commissioned by motorsport’s official governing body, the FIA, and Bluebird is aiming to become one of the four manufacturers chosen to supply vehicles to the race teams.

The move brings the Bluebird name “back to its roots”, Wales told TheChargingPoint.com. “Formula-E represents the birth of a new era for us. Where we struggle with [financial] support for land speed record attempts, the circuit racing car is going to be more attractive to potential sponsors. Formula-E really is the future, definitely. Electric racing, with the FIA behind it, is going to be a big thing, and if we’re in it at the dawn of that then Bluebird should be a very strong brand for the future.

“Grandfather started his racing career on the circuit before going into record-breaking,” said Wales. “I went into land-speed record-breaking first and now we’re going into circuit racing, so it really has gone full circle.”

It’s still early days for Bluebird Formula-E; project director Martin Rees began talking to the FIA in January this year. As such, the car is currently only in prototype form at the moment, completed the night before the launch, due to go into the wind tunnel for aerodynamic testing.

However, much of the drivetrain is already complete, having been employed in the Bluebird electric land speed vehicle that failed in its record attempt earlier in the year at Pendine Sands. Rees has so far assembled a team of nine people for the Formula-E project, including former Ferrari F1 chassis designers Chris Hewett and Gareth Hutchinson.

“In our centenary year, the FIA decided in its wisdom to create a race series using the very technology in which are experts, so what could we do?” Rees told us. “We just had to be involved, and when we spoke to the FIA we felt that they had a passion for us to be involved, too. They could see that Bluebird added value to what they’re trying to achieve, and that squared a circle for us. It was a no-brainer.”

“The downside of Bluebird is that we can’t fail," he continued. "Bluebird is synonymous with success in speed record breaking; we want to make it synonymous with success in circuit racing.”

ERIC MUSGRAVE

Is quoted as saying that: "His destination on Tuesday June 12 was the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London to see a line-up of five historic Bluebird vehicles dating from 1912 to 2000."

"The black craft in the photograph is a prototype of a vehicle that may appear in a new electric-powered Formula E race series being considered by the FIA, the global governing body of motor racing."

"I write most of the bi-annual magazines produced by Christopher Ward Watches, a British producer of fine timepieces (www.christopherward.co.uk). The company has just been named as the official timing partner to the Bluebird team. I am seen here with Jörg Bader, president of CW’s Swiss-based watch maker Synergies Horlogeres, and Johannes Jahnke, the highly regarded “engineer” (or designer) at the company."

FORMULA E - Formula E is a class of auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The "formula", designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply. Formula E is intended to be the highest class of competition for one-make, single-seat, electrically-powered racing cars. The series was conceived in 2012, with the inaugural championship to be held in 2014. Demonstration events are planned for the second half of 2013.

Former Formula One driver Lucas di Grassi was announced as the series test driver in September 2012. Forty-two cars were ordered in November 2012, with Formula One team McLaren providing the motor, transmission and electronics that all cars will use.

Ten host cities are planning races for the 2014 season; unlike most motorsport categories, Formula E races will be run exclusively on street circuits. Rio de Janeiro and Rome were the first host cities to be announced. FE holdings are currently in talks with London mayor Boris Johnson for a London race event.

The world's fastest electric land speed record car, a blue bird eco streamliner

Inspired by Reid Railton, Ken Norris and the exploits of Malcolm and Donald Campbell, this is potentially the world's fastest electric car: 350mph + using energy from nature. The BE3 features patent Bluebird™ built in battery cartridge exchange, charged using renewable solar energy. Sponsors sought for the 2016 season. Please note that the blue bird logo on the tail of the BE3 above is a registered trademark, and please note that this is not a project involving Don Wales or his company: Bluebird Electric Limited.
