World Solar Challenge 2005

From September 25 through 30, some 20 cars were set to compete in a very special race: the 8th World Solar Challenge in Australia. The racing machines do not burn any gas – their motors are powered by the sun. High-tech solar cells convert sunlight into useable energy. Participants in the race hailed from eleven countries, among them the solar racecar "HansGo!" from the Electrical Engineering and Information Science Department at the University of Applied Sciences in Bochum, Germany.

Students and professors at the university have together been tweaking the car for months in order to achieve optimal handling with as little wind resistance as possible when traversing the entire continent, from Darwin in the North to Adelaide in the South.

The high-tech speedster can reach a top speed of 105 km/hour. The technical equipment of "Hans Go!", who finished 8th in this year´s contest, is based on the same photovoltaic technology used to produce environmentally friendly energy from roof installations found atop thousands of homes and buildings. For this reason, companies like SunTechnics are supporting the project financially as well.

"With the sponsoring commitment we aim to contribute to making the latest research developments useful in daily life with practical applications – 'HansGo!' shows just how varied the possible applications are", said Daniel Priem, CEO of SunTechnics Solar Technology Pty Ltd.

The leading German team, Hans Go, from Bochum University had their car on the track running on motorcycle tires, but was concerned over the energy usage the car needed to sustain speed. Hans Go is a very friendly team and we were pleased to see them again after competing with them in the Phaethon 2004 event held last May in Greece.

Hans Go is the second solar vehicle built by the Solar Car @ FHBO & SBU team. The team consists of mechanical, electrical engineering and mechatronics students who are studying at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences.

May 24 2004

Today was a great day of racing - Principia is currently in 3rd place! Here are the top 7 teams (out of 14) after 1 day of racing:

1) Ashiya University
2) Osaka Sangyo University (OSU)
3) Principia College
4) Nuon Solar Team
5) Team Lux - Yale Solar Racing
6) Team Aurora
7) FH Bochum / London SBU (Team Hans Go)

Tonight, the team is being treated to BBQ by team Hans Go. Many of you will remember Hans Go as the German team that placed 5th, just ahead of Principia College, in the 2003 World Solar Challenge.

ABOUT BOCHUM

Bochum is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany. It is located in the Ruhr-Area between the cities of Essen and Dortmund. Bochum provides many opportunities. The city is actually much greener than one would think. Part of the city centre is a designated leisure area. Bochum is a model for the structural change of the whole Ruhr industrial region.

Although Bochum was founded in the 14th century, the town was insignificant until the 19th century, when coal mining and steel industry emerged in the Ruhr area, leading to the growth of the entire region. The population of Bochum increased tenfold between 1850 and 1890. Between 1960 and 1973, all the mines were closed. Other industries, such as car manufacturing, compensated for the loss of jobs. Two castles from the "Middle Ages"have survived on the northern banks of the Ruhr river.

More famous are the German Mining Museum, and the nostalgic Train Museum in the borough of Dahlhausen. In 1965 the Ruhr University was founded (the first university to be founded in post-war Federal Republic of Germany). Of course, vital and vitalizing features of the town are the students of the Ruhr-University (RUB), the largest in Ruhr-Area and a thriving pub culture of the "Bermuda triangle" the night-life district in the city centre.
