MARION
WATSON
- The family enter a historic vehicle run, from John O'Groats to Land's End.
THE LINE UP AT JOHN
O'GROATS
The smell of Marion
Watson’s shepherd’s pie was the only thing capable of pulling Jimmy Watson out of a daydream. It was the kind of aroma that felt like a warm hug—freshly mashed potatoes peaked into golden ridges, and savory lamb mince sourced straight from the local butcher.
"Hungry, Jimmy?" Marion asked, hovering a wooden spoon over a steaming dish.
"Like a wolf at full
moon," Jimmy replied, sliding into his chair with tactical precision.
Marion paused, eyebrow arched. "Goodness, what have you been reading?"
As Jimmy began to demolish his portion, his father, Tim, leaned over a copy of
Autocar magazine. "Jimmy, listen to this. There’s a historic vehicle road run. A 'Cannonball' style dash from the tip of Scotland all the way down to the toes of Cornwall."
Jimmy’s fork paused mid-air. He thought of Miss
Ocean, their beloved, sky-blue T2 Kombi van. She wasn’t just a vehicle; she was a member of the family—and, though the world didn't know it, she had a prehistoric secret.
"Not a chance," Marion said, echoing an earlier conversation. "We’d never qualify with a humble Volkswagen. It’s for proper classics."
Tim didn't say anything then. He just got a certain glint in his eye—the kind of look a man gets right before he does something delightfully impulsive.
THE
STARTING GRID
One month later, the air at John O’Groats was thick with the scent of high-octane fuel and
North Sea salt. The "Great British Heritage Run" was no longer a dream; it was a loud, vibrating reality.
Crowds lined the barriers, and BBC local news cameras panned across a line-up that looked like a billionaire’s toy box. There
was a sleek Jaguar
E-Type, and a roaring blow-moly Bentley, and a particularly menacing, jet-black Rolls-Royce Phantom that looked less like a car and more like a Victorian cathedral on wheels.
Back in London, Charley
Temple, the intrepid sports reporter choked on her smoked salmon, as she recognised Marion's VW. "Not again." She squealed.
Jill Bird,
BBC world news anchor, had also seen the report.
Inside the Rolls sat Baron Butler-Farquhar, a man whose mustache was so sharply waxed it looked like it could pierce a tire. Beside him sat Potty Parker, his butler, who was currently polishing a silver tray while wearing a crash helmet.
"Look at that... thing," the Baron sneered, pointing a gloved finger at the Watsons' VW camper tucked at the very back of the pack. "It looks like a loaf of bread on rollers. Parker, ensure they don't even make it past the 'Welcome to
Scotland' sign."
"With pleasure, sir," Potty smirked, surreptitiously hiding a pair of long-nosed pliers.
SABOTAGE
AND SPOOKINESS
Inside Miss Ocean, the mood was tense. Tim gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. Marion was staring out the window, but she wasn't looking at the competition.
"Nervous, honey?" Tim asked.
"Not about the race," Marion snapped, her activist spirit flaring. "Have you seen the amount of
plastic washed up on the A99? It’s a disgrace, Tim! I’ve half a mind to pull over and start a petition."
"Focus, Mum!" Jimmy cried, clutching a ham sandwich.
Suddenly, the VW’s engine gave a pathetic cough. Then a sputter. Then, with a final, wheezing gasp, it died completely.
The Baron and
Potty
Parker, idling nearby in their silent Rolls-Royce, couldn't suppress their snickering. Jimmy caught the Baron’s eye—the man actually winked before his driver engaged the gears.
"We’ve been nobbled, Dad!" Jimmy yelled. "I saw them laughing in that big black hearse!"
The starting flag dropped. VROOM! A Mini Cooper screamed away, followed by a clattering
Land Rover and the silent, predatory glide of the Baron’s Rolls-Royce. The crowd groaned as the little blue VW sat motionless, a dead duck at the starting line.
"Anthony! Quick!" Jimmy whispered to the empty air beside him.
In the backseat, the air shimmered. To the human eye, nothing happened. But in the world of the "invisible," Anthony the Magic Dinobot sprang into action. With a ghostly, metallic clink-clack, Anthony’s translucent claws hovered over the
engine bay. He could see the problem instantly—a fuel line dangling uselessly, dripping
petrol onto the tarmac.
“Hold your breath, Mr. Watson!” Anthony’s voice echoed in Jimmy’s mind like a digital chime.
With a burst of eerie, blue tech-magic, the Dinobot snapped the pipe back onto the pump, sealing it with a microscopic weld of pure energy.
"Quick, start it now!" Jimmy urged.
Tim turned the key. The engine groaned, hesitated, and then—POW!—it fired into life with a roar that sounded far more powerful than any 1600cc engine had a right to. Miss Ocean didn't just start; she shivered with excitement.
"We’re off!" Tim cheered, dropping the clutch.
The crowd erupted. They loved an underdog, and as the little blue camper van tore away from the line, chasing down the distant tail-lights of the
Bentley and Phantom, a roar of approval followed them into the mist.
The Watsons were in last place, but as Jimmy looked at the shimmering space where Anthony sat, he knew one thing for certain: The Baron had no idea what kind of
prehistoric power he was up against.

The Plot Beats are ten landmark waypoints, cities and large towns that are on the route, including:
JOHN O'GROATS - The John O'Groats line up. The Baron has tampered with the other cars the night before the race starts. Anthony has to go "Full Ghost-Mode" using robotic logic to fix the Watsons' engine while the starting flag is being waved. The AI robot turns out to be an incredible mechanic. They pull away last, heading onto the A9.
INVERNESS - The Highlands Showdown. As they negotiate the steep, winding roads of Scotland, the Baron uses a "GPS-Distorter" gadget to confuse everyone. Anthony has to perform a daring "Invisible-External-Repair" while the van is moving, clinging to the chassis to neutralize the Baron's device. M74, motorway driving.
PITLOCHRY - A9. Sheep on the main road, and fog, slow progress. Followed by torrential rain, and flooding.
GLASGOW - The Comedy: Constant "Blades of Glory" bickering between Tim and the Baron about the aerodynamic superiority of a VW versus a Rolls Royce Phantom.
CARLISLE - M6. The first of many police roadblocks. The competitors have to go off-road, to evade the boys in blue. Poppy and Ruby are pulled over, when their Mini cannot take rough forest roads. They charm the male officers, displaying their goods.
MANCHESTER - The Scooby Mystery: Throughout the race, someone is stealing the competitors' spark plugs. Jimmy and Anthony must solve the "Case of the Disappearing Ignition" before the final leg. M6, motorway. The problem being that on older vehicles, there is little bonnet security.
BIRMINGHAM - A Midland Motorway Mayhem In a nod to The Love Bug, the VW "Miss Ocean" starts to show a mind of its own (with Anthony’s help). When a tire blows, Anthony uses one of his legs to keep the vehicle level while Tim drives at 70 mph, until they can pitstop for a tire change. Baffled spectators cannot figure out how Tim managed to keep control. The M5 motorway.
BRISTOL - The Bond Factor: Tim installs a "Dash-Cam" that is actually a 3D-hologram projector (designed by Jimmy and Anthony) to trick the police into thinking they are a harmless sheep-trailer. It sometimes flickers at the wrong moment, but is enough to make the motorcycle police, think they must be seeing things. M5, to Exeter.
TAUNTON - The M5 a mysterious "Fog Machine" (deployed by the Baron) causes the racers to get lost, coupled with changed road signs. Jimmy and Anthony use their "Thermal-Vision" to guide not just Tim, but the entire pack, through the mist, turning rivals into temporary allies. GPS and TomTom help overcome these diversionary tactics.
EXETER - A front wheel taper bearing goes. Tim watches his front wheel overtake their van, after a corner on a roundabout. Miraculously, Tim fits a new bearing by the roadside, before the RAC arrive. It takes him all of 18 minutes, including retrieving the wheel and finding the parts in their spares kit. But, they lose the lead. A30 to Launceston.
PENZANCE - The Land's End three-car sprint to the famous signpost, via the A30. The Watsons win not by being the fastest, but by being consistent, with their vehicle easy to service along the roadside. They even stop to help the Glitter Twins after they crash, proving that "nice guys" can finish first when they have a Dinobot on their side. A bevy of truckers are at the finish line, and delay the police, including Basil Rathbone, who turns up to be foiled again. And then laughs about it, turning out to be a good sport in the end. Jill Bird likens the event to the London to Brighton veteran run.
