MARION
WATSON
- The family enter a historic vehicle run, from John O'Groats to Land's End.
<<<<
LAUNCESTON LEAP
The Cornish border rushed toward them, a blur of emerald green and ancient stone walls. Inside the cabin of
Miss-Ocean, the air was thick with the scent of sea salt and anticipation.
"Crikey, Dad! Look to the left!" Jimmy pressed his face against the glass.
Emerging from a bank of morning mist was a mountain of British racing green and gleaming chrome—the legendary
Bentley Blower. Its massive supercharger whined like a prehistoric beast.
"It can't be!" Marion exclaimed, her hands gripping the dashboard. "If we’re level with
Winston, we’re either making record time, or that Bentley has finally met its match."
Tim Watson looked down at the speedometer, his eyes wide. "You’re not speeding, are you, Dad? I don't want to explain a ticket to Grandma."
Mr. Watson gave the steering wheel a cheeky pat. "Speeding? Perish the thought, Tim. Miss-Ocean is just... enthusiastic today."
"Technically," Anthony
AI’s voice drifted from the speakers, sounding impossibly calm for a van traveling at a 'spirited' pace, "Mr. Watson is not speeding. However, Miss-Ocean’s average velocity is remarkably high compared to the rest of the fleet. Many of our competitors have been delayed by
Sergeant Miller’s 'Merry Men' and their roadside chats."
A holographic map flickered on the dash, showing a dozen red dots—competitors pulled over—while a single blue dot (them) skipped past like a stone over
water.
THE BARON'S CHANGE OF HEART
A few miles ahead, tucked into a lay-by near Launceston, sat the Baron’s sleek, sinister black interceptor.
Baron Farquhar sat in the back, twirling a devious-looking remote control that was wired to a series of "Road Closed" signs he’d prepared earlier.
"Ready the sleight of hand, Percy," the Baron hissed. "One flick of this switch, and the Watsons will be heading toward a dead-end farm track in
Devon. We shall win by default!"
Percy
Parker, his long-suffering chauffeur, didn't move. He just looked in the rearview mirror with a soulful, pouting expression. "Really, sir? After they helped us with that flat tire in the Highlands? It’s a bit... unsporting. Even for a villain."
The Baron froze. He looked at the remote. He looked at Percy’s judging eyes. He let out a long, dramatic sigh that sounded like a deflating balloon.
"Oh, curse your moral compass, Potty Parker! Fine!" He tossed the remote into the footwell. "If I can’t be a mastermind of chaos, I shall be a masterpiece of hospitality! Break out the
Solar
Cola!"
THE SOLAR SAVIOUR
What happened next was pure Wacky Races absurdity. Instead of oil slicks or tack-strips, the Baron and Percy began leaning out of their moving car, handing out chilled cans of "Solar Cola" and gourmet finger sandwiches to the runners as they zoomed past.
At first, the racers swerved in terror. Is it an explosive? Is it a bribe?
Nikolia Novak, thundering along in his sleek E-Type Jaguar, was the first to take the plunge. He snatched a can from Percy’s outstretched hand, popped the tab, and took a swig.
"By the stars!" Nikolia roared into his CB radio. "It is magnificent! It tastes like sunshine and victory! Baron Farquhar is a thirsty pilot’s saviour!"
The airwaves erupted. Even Inspector
Rathbone, miles behind in his pursuit car, felt his throat go bone-dry as he listened to the rave reviews. "Solar Cola, eh?" he muttered, licking his lips. "I wouldn't mind a drop of that myself."
A TOAST TO THE ROAD
As Miss-Ocean pulled alongside the Baron’s car, the window rolled down. The Baron looked slightly embarrassed, holding out a silver tray of nibbles while Percy steered with one hand.
"A peace offering, Watson!" the Baron shouted over the wind. "Don't get used to it!"
Marion reached out and snagged a tray of smoked salmon blinis. "Thank you, Baron! Apology accepted!"
Inside the van, Anthony’s invisible presence seemed to hum with satisfaction. The tech-magic in the air felt warmer, less "spooky" and more "sparkly." A can of Solar Cola floated up from the tray, the tab clicking open by itself before drifting toward Mr. Watson’s cup holder.
"My pleasure," Anthony whispered through the vents, though his digital eyes on the screen winked.
The "Launceston Leap" had turned from a race of rivals into a rolling banquet. But as the sun began to dip toward the
horizon, the finish line at
Land’s End beckoned. The kindness was over—now, it was a sprint to the finish.

The Plot Beats are ten landmark waypoints, cities and large towns that are on the route, including:
JOHN O'GROATS - The John O'Groats line up. The Baron has tampered with the other cars the night before the race starts. Anthony has to go "Full Ghost-Mode" using robotic logic to fix the Watsons' engine while the starting flag is being waved. The AI robot turns out to be an incredible mechanic. They pull away last, heading onto the A9.
INVERNESS - The Highlands Showdown. As they negotiate the steep, winding roads of Scotland, the Baron uses a "GPS-Distorter" gadget to confuse everyone. Anthony has to perform a daring "Invisible-External-Repair" while the van is moving, clinging to the chassis to neutralize the Baron's device. M74, motorway driving.
PITLOCHRY - A9. Sheep on the main road, and fog, slow progress. Followed by torrential rain, and flooding.
GLASGOW - The Comedy: Constant "Blades of Glory" bickering between Tim and the Baron about the aerodynamic superiority of a VW versus a Rolls Royce Phantom.
CARLISLE - M6. The first of many police roadblocks. The competitors have to go off-road, to evade the boys in blue. Poppy and Ruby are pulled over, when their Mini cannot take rough forest roads. They charm the male officers, displaying their goods.
MANCHESTER - The Scooby Mystery: Throughout the race, someone is stealing the competitors' spark plugs. Jimmy and Anthony must solve the "Case of the Disappearing Ignition" before the final leg. M6, motorway. The problem being that on older vehicles, there is little bonnet security.
BIRMINGHAM - A Midland Motorway Mayhem In a nod to The Love Bug, the VW "Miss Ocean" starts to show a mind of its own (with Anthony’s help). When a tire blows, Anthony uses one of his legs to keep the vehicle level while Tim drives at 70 mph, until they can pitstop for a tire change. Baffled spectators cannot figure out how Tim managed to keep control. The M5 motorway.
BRISTOL - The Bond Factor: Tim installs a "Dash-Cam" that is actually a 3D-hologram projector (designed by Jimmy and Anthony) to trick the police into thinking they are a harmless sheep-trailer. It sometimes flickers at the wrong moment, but is enough to make the motorcycle police, think they must be seeing things. M5, to Exeter.
TAUNTON - The M5 a mysterious "Fog Machine" (deployed by the Baron) causes the racers to get lost, coupled with changed road signs. Jimmy and Anthony use their "Thermal-Vision" to guide not just Tim, but the entire pack, through the mist, turning rivals into temporary allies. GPS and TomTom help overcome these diversionary tactics.
EXETER - A front wheel taper bearing goes. Tim watches his front wheel overtake their van, after a corner on a roundabout. Miraculously, Tim fits a new bearing by the roadside, before the RAC arrive. It takes him all of 18 minutes, including retrieving the wheel and finding the parts in their spares kit. But, they lose the lead. A30 to Launceston.
PENZANCE - The Land's End three-car sprint to the famous signpost, via the A30. The Watsons win not by being the fastest, but by being consistent, with their vehicle easy to service along the roadside. They even stop to help the Glitter Twins after they crash, proving that "nice guys" can finish first when they have a Dinobot on their side. A bevy of truckers are at the finish line, and delay the police, including Basil Rathbone, who turns up to be foiled again. And then laughs about it, turning out to be a good sport in the end. Jill Bird likens the event to the London to Brighton veteran run.
