MARION
WATSON
- The family enter a historic vehicle run, from John O'Groats to Land's End.
Baron
Butler-Farquhar drives a Rolls Royce Phantom in the Cannonball
Run, from
John O'Groats in Scotland, to Land's
End.
With a
penchant for sabotage and dirty tricks. His chauffer Percy Parker is his navigator, and henchman.
The
Baron wears a monocle, much as Auric Goldfinger,
in the famous James
Bond movie. He is dark haired, slightly overweight, and sometimes
wears a top hat and long dark coat.
At
the Podium hosted by Cornwall
County Council, he is awarded a Cannonball Blue
Riband medal, by Arthur King and Silas Stone.
1. THE ETHICS: GAMESMANSHIP Vs. SPORTSMANSHIP
To understand the Baron’s moral dilemma, we have to look at how he defines the "game."
The Social Contract of Racing: Most competitors agree to a set of rules (even unwritten ones) to test their skill. This is Sportsmanship. When the Baron cheats, he breaks this contract, essentially saying he is "above" the others.
The "Zero-Sum" Fallacy: Cheating often stems from the belief that winning is the only way to retain value. If the Baron loses, he isn't just "second place"—in his mind, he is nothing.
The Meritocracy Argument: Percy represents the purist view. He believes a win only has value if it's earned through agency (skill, grit, and the Rolls Royce’s engineering). If they sabotage a rival, the trophy becomes a hollow monument to a lie.
2. THE BARON'S PSYCHOLOGICAL BLUEPRINT
Why does the "good person" inside the Baron lose the fight so often? Here are a few psychological drivers that might explain his leaning toward the dark side:
The "Legacy of Perfection"
As a Baron, he likely grew up in an environment where failure was not an option. In aristocratic circles, a loss isn't a private moment; it’s a public stain on a centuries-old name. He might cheat not out of malice, but out of existential terror. To him, sabotage isn't "wrong"—it's a defensive measure to protect his identity.
Imposter Syndrome
Deep down, the Baron might not believe he can win on skill alone. If he secretly doubts his own driving ability compared to the "common" racers, cheating becomes a way to level a playing field he feels is tilted against him. The "good person" inside is the one who wants to be worthy; the "cheat" is the one who is scared he isn't.
The "Noblesse Oblige" Distortion
He might justify his actions through a warped sense of superiority. He might think, "The world expects a Baron to be at the front. I am simply restoring the natural order of things." This allows him to bypass the guilt Percy feels.
3. THE 'CRACKS' IN TEAM PHANTOM
The friction between the Baron and Percy is a goldmine for our "Cannonball Run" story because they represent the Baron’s own internal halves:
a) Percy is the Baron’s Conscience: As a former chauffeur, Percy has seen the Baron at his most vulnerable. He knows the "good person" is there. When Percy questions the ethics, he isn't just being a moralist; he's trying to save his friend’s soul.
b) The Rolls Royce as a Symbol: The car is a masterpiece of honest engineering. For Percy, using a "pure" machine to do "dirty" work is a form of sacrilege.
