The guitar is a fretted, stringed musical instrument. Guitars are used in a wide variety of musical styles, and are also widely known as a solo classical instrument. They are most recognized in popular culture as the primary instrument in blues and rock music. The guitar usually has six strings but 12 string instruments are also found, these are used mostly in classical and folk music.
DESCRIPTION
Guitar strings are strung parallel to the neck, whose surface is covered by the fingerboard (fretboard). By depressing a string against the fingerboard, the effective length of the string can be altered, which in turn changes the frequency at which the string will vibrate when plucked. Guitarists typically use one hand to pluck the strings and the other to depress the strings against the fingerboard. The hand with which one strums or plucks the strings determines handedness (left or right). The strings may be plucked using either fingers or a plectrum ([[is achieved either mechanically or electronically, forming two main categories of guitar: acoustic (mechanical amplification) and electric (electronic amplification).
Guitars are made and repaired by people called luthiers.
ELECTRIC GUITARS
An electric guitar is a type of guitar that utilizes electronic pickups to convert the vibration of its steel-cored strings into electrical current. The signal may be electrically altered to achieve various tonal effects prior to being fed into an amplifier, which produces the final sound which can be either an electrical sound or an acoustic sound. Distortion pedals can change the sound that is emitted from the amplifier.
The electric guitar is used extensively in many popular styles of music, including punk rock, heavy metal, blues, rock and roll, country music, pop music, jazz, rap and even contemporary classical music. Its distinctive sound and intimate association with many legendary internationally-famous musicians has made it the signature instrument of late twentieth-century music.
Specialised steel guitars, although they are also electric instruments descended from the guitar, are normally not considered electric guitars but rather as a separate instrument. This distinction has important consequences on claims of priority in the history of the electric guitar.
