Original BE1 design drawing by Nelson Kruschand August 1990

The above drawing dated 16 August 1990 is the original or pre-production art for the car later christened 'Bluebird Electric' in May of 1991 at the Bexhill 100.  This car was to have been equipped with 'Jestar' motor/gearbox units, giving either 200hp and 2 wheel drive or 400hp and 4 wheel drive versions.  The limiting factor would then have been the battery cartridge capacity and the energy available, largely dependent on the battery technology employed.

Hawker Energy aircraft replacement (starter) batteries were among the types considered.  The FIA via ACCUS, confirmed to Nelson that his cartridge replacement system was allowed under racing rules.  In order to reduce the frontal area to a minimum the driver faced forward motorcycle style, saddling the central cartridge tunnel.

This car was constructed with a modified canopy and tail fin fitted to replace the rear wheel spats.  It was shown many times before Nelson was persuaded to develop his enclosed wheel design which became known as the Bluebird Electric 2 or BE2
